Lens Generations Compared
- Mark III (2016–Present): The pinnacle of the series, featuring an all-new optical design that solves the “soft edges” issue of previous models. It uses 16 elements in 11 groups, including large-diameter double-surface GMo and UD lenses for elite clarity.
- Mark II (2007–2016): A long-standing professional favorite known for excellent center sharpness and a virtually circular aperture for smooth bokeh. However, it is notorious for softer performance at the extreme edges when shot wide open at f/2.8.
- Mark I (2001–2007): The original version, noted for being lighter and using a smaller 77mm filter thread compared to the 82mm thread used by the newer versions.
